More than a Mall

More than a Mall:

The Huntington Mall Continues to Reinvent Community Spaces

For many in the Tri-State, a trip to the Huntington Mall isn’t just about crossing items off a shopping list. It’s where grandparents spend Tuesday mornings reading stories with their grandchildren, teenagers gather with friends on a Saturday afternoon, families celebrate holidays together and local entrepreneurs open the doors to their first storefront.

According to Marketing Director Margi Valdez, that’s exactly what the mall was designed to be.

“I kind of think of the mall almost like a town square,” she said. “Our focus is being a place for families and friends to gather.”

While the Huntington Mall is home to many nationally recognized retailers, Margi said one of the center’s greatest strengths is something many shoppers don’t realize.

“We probably have close to 20 or more locally owned businesses here,” she said. “People know our national tenants, but we’re also home to a lot of local businesses, and that number just keeps growing.”

From locally owned boutiques and artisan markets to restaurants like longtime favorite Big Loafer, the mall has intentionally built a tenant mix that blends national brands with hometown businesses. Even businesses like Chick-fil-A are locally owned franchises, reinforcing the mall’s connection to community, Valdez said.

That community extends far beyond shopping, she added.

Throughout the year, the mall hosts programs that bring people together regardless of age, including story time during Toddler Tuesday, the Mindful Mile Walker Program, and a teen Fashion Advisory Board that helps model clothes while acting as ambassadors for community events.

Most recently, the Woody Williams Center for Advanced Learning and Careers joined the group of tenants, creating new educational opportunities alongside shopping, dining and entertainment.

“We just keep growing,” Valdez said. “It used to be shop, play, dine, stay. Now, it’s shop, play, dine, stay, learn.”

While many malls across the country have struggled over the past decade, the Huntington Mall has continued to thrive. Valdez credits that success to ownership that never stops looking ahead.

“The key to our success is that we never stop,” she said. “It’s always, ‘We’re doing great, but what are we doing next?’”

Rather than scaling back during economic downturns, the mall continued investing in marketing and improvements, Valdez said.

“The first thing a lot of businesses cut is marketing,” she said. “We didn’t. We stayed top of mind with our customers and let people know we are still here.”

That mindset has helped the Huntington Mall attract more than eight million visitors annually while continually adapting to what today’s shoppers want.

Experience has become one of the mall’s biggest competitive advantages, Valdez said.

Visitors can catch a movie, spend an afternoon at Dave & Buster’s, let their children explore the indoor play area, ride the mall train, enjoy local dining options or simply spend time together in a safe, welcoming environment.

Valdez said she has even noticed an unexpected trend.

“I like to call them the new mall rats,” she said, referring to Gen Z shoppers. “They’re coming back to the mall because it’s a place where they can hang out, make TikToks, shop and just be together.”

For many younger visitors, the mall has once again become a social destination, something that’s difficult to replicate through online shopping.

As the holidays approach each year, that sense of community only grows stronger, Valdez said.

Santa’s arrival marks the beginning of a season filled with free family events, sensory-friendly visits, pet photos, community performances, holiday gift wrapping hosted by local nonprofits, and partnerships with organizations like the Salvation Army and local schools.

Christmas Eve ends with one final tradition as Santa visits Hoops Family Children’s Hospital to deliver gifts to children unable to spend the holiday at home.

“We try to make Christmas at the mall about giving as well as receiving,” Valdez said.

After more than two decades with the Huntington Mall, Valdez said from organizing Survivor casting calls and continuously reinventing Santa’s arrival each holiday season, every event has become another opportunity to learn, grow and create lasting experiences for families.

Looking ahead, she said she believes people are craving something that can’t be delivered to a front porch.

“People need people,” Valdez said. “Experience is the big thing right now, and you can’t get that online.”

For the Huntington Mall, experience is what the future is all about. The Huntington Mall is not simply a place to shop, but remains a place where the community comes together, no matter the occasion.

New Look, New Attractions at

 Grand Central Mall

If you like the mall now, you’re going to love what’s on the way. A major renovation is about to commence at Grand Central Mall in Vienna, West Virginia.  It is designed to introduce a fresh, modern look and make the mall more comfortable and functional for its visitors and merchants.  The multi-million dollar project will include new flooring, roofing, wall finishes, restrooms and more.  New, energy-efficient lighting will make the concourses brighter and more appealing.  Customer amenities will include attractive new seating, furniture and other interior décor.  The mall entrances will be reconstructed.  A significant portion of the mall’s parking areas will be repaved and made vastly brighter with new light fixtures.  The entire project will be completed in time for Santa’s arrival in November, 2026.

“This is just part of our commitment to residents of the Mid-Ohio Valley region.” said Cafaro Company Co-President Anthony Cafaro, Jr. (Cafaro Company is the mall’s parent firm.) “When we purchased Grand Central Mall last year, we were incredibly impressed by its vibrant lineup of retailers and strong reputation in a trade area that spans two states.  We are determined to make this wonderful shopping center even better.”

Chad Emrick, Mayor of the City of Vienna, said “The City of Vienna is extremely excited to see the renovations and new opportunities the Cafaro Company has brought to our community, we look forward to doing great things in the future.”

The General Contractor for the renovation will be Phoenix Associates, based in Parkersburg, West Virginia.  Additionally, many subcontractors and tradespeople from the surrounding region are expected to participate in the work, ensuring that the economic benefits of this multi-million dollar project will directly benefit citizens of the Mid-Ohio Valley.  “I’m proud to be part of the Cafaro team, and very excited about the project.” said Phoenix President Tim Coffman.  “This will definitely revitalize the Grand Central Mall!

As the renovation unfolds, an exciting new business will innovate the traditional shopping experience at Grand Central Mall. The Hive Entertainment Zone is currently under construction inside the former Goody’s store space.  This 20,000 square foot entertainment center, located strategically between the Food Court and Regal Cinema, will feature sports courts to accommodate basketball and dodgeball, an oversized soft play park for children, inflatables, a full arcade, a new industry leading rope land course, and more.  While children are enjoying thrilling activities, parents can relax and see all the action from the Honeycomb Café, which will serve up tasty snacks, pizza and a variety of drinks.  The Hive offers premier, high-quality technology that places the safety of customers as its highest priority.  In addition to an interior mall entrance, The Hive will have exterior doors to access later-evening events. It is scheduled to welcome its first customers in November of this year

In addition to The Hive, discussions are underway with several retailers and other businesses potentially interested in opening locations at Grand Central Mall.

Since 1972, Grand Central Mall has been serving the Vienna/Parkersburg area, as well as Marietta, Ohio and the surrounding region.  It is located at 100 Grand Central Mall Avenue in the City of Vienna, West Virginia.  The mall complex encompasses nearly 1 million square feet of space.  It is the only major shopping destination within a 70+ mile radius. Boscov’s kicks off Grand Opening for first store in West Virginia

Boscov’s kicks off West Virginia grand opening celebration with Charity Day shopping as thousands flock to see new store in Bridgeport’s Meadowbrook Mall

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WV News) — The line to get into the Boscov’s location at Meadowbrook Mall on Thursday stretched down the sidewalk in both directions, filled with hundreds of shoppers eagerly waiting to be among the first inside the area’s newest department store.

Each of those in attendance paid $5 for a shopping pass that allowed them to participate in the store’s Charity Day. All the proceeds from the sale of the passes will benefit 175 local nonprofits.

“I’m absolutely thrilled,” said Jim Boscov, chairman and CEO of Boscov’s. “Certainly, it’s great to have a store full of people, but this is Charity Day. These are people who donated $5 to their favorite charity.”

Boscov had a very busy morning, which included greeting customers as they lined up outside and making periodic announcements over the store’s intercom system.

“People who have never seen us before are saying, ‘Wow, you guys really have everything.’ It’s a big store,” he said. “As busy as we are, we have about 220 co-workers that we’ve hired right from the area, plus we have another 150 that we’ve asked to come down from our other stores to help out. We’ve got lots of people to offer service.”

Wendy Imperial, a Bridgeport resident, said she’s been anticipating the opening of Boscov’s for several months.

“I walk every morning up here at the mall, so I’ve been watching the progress of stores moving and then this being built. I’m just thrilled that the day is finally here,” she said.

Imperial said she’s glad the mall was able to secure another anchor retailer after years of seeing stores move or relocate.

“So many times you see malls that are becoming obsolete. It’s so sad to see that square footage get emptied,” she said. “This is going to be an absolute boost in the arm of our community. All of the surrounding retailers are going to benefit from it. And we’re just thrilled that they chose this mall to come to and open a new store.”

Imperial used Boscov’s Charity Day to get a jump on her holiday shopping.

“I looked for some of the ‘door buster’ deals — I got some flashlights that I was looking for and then saw these that were on sale,” she said, holding up a decorative throw blanket. “I’m heading to women’s clothes to look at some things there that I’ve seen through the window as I’ve been walking.”

Harley Jeffries, a Bridgeport resident, said he’d also heard a lot about the Boscov’s opening.

“We’d been hearing about it for a while. It’s been underway and under construction. We’re always anxious — we’re a bunch of lookie-loos — to come see what’s what and what’s going on with the store and what all they have,” Jeffries said.

Thursday’s events kicked off Boscov’s Three-Day Grand Opening Celebration.

Friday will be Family Fun Day, featuring free family activities and entertainment. It will be the first opportunity for members of the public who didn’t purchase a Charity Day pass to shop in the store.

On Saturday, starting at 9:30 a.m., the Bridgeport High School marching band will kick off a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Brad Riffee, executive director of the United Way of Harrison and Doddridge Counties, and representatives of United Way member agencies will cut a special ribbon made of $100 bills for the agencies, plus a $1,000 bill for the United Way itself.

Saturday shoppers also can take in performances by Elvis Aaron Presley Jr., and Jason Lindsey, aka “Mr. Science.”
