The facade of Governors Square Mall facing Wilma Rudolph Boulevard now bears another household name in retail.

Burlington Stores officially opened to Clarksville-area customers early Friday, and its business name and corporate logo is emblazoned across the front of the mall alongside Belk, JC Penney, Ross and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

A brief ribbon-cutting ceremony just before 8 a.m. marked Burlington’s official arrival in Clarksville. A few customers had been waiting outside the store’s entrance in a light rain since around 5 a.m.

Among them were Sarah Vaughn, of Clarksville, and Frieda Godetta, of Oak Grove, Ky.

“It’s long overdue to have a Burlington store in Clarksville,” Vaughn said. She had previously shopped at Burlington locations in Nashville and Indianapolis, Ind.

“I like the prices, and the quality of their clothes,” she said.

Godetta said she arrived bright and early because she was just eager to see it.

“I feel that Clarksville is going to be a good place for Burlington to come to,” she said.

The new Burlington store encompasses much of the space previously occupied by Sears in Governors Square. Merchandise selection was plentiful for the first customers in the building.

The store manager for the new Clarksville Burlington location — store no. 1305 to be precise — is Lenny Rodriguez.

After cutting the ceremonial ribbon along with other store and community representatives, Rodriguez told The Leaf-Chronicle that Clarksville is a perfect market for Burlington.

“We’re extremely excited and thrilled to have a home in this community,” Rodriguez said.

“Clarksville is a rapidly-growing city outside of Nashville. It’s an amazing market to be in. We’re happy to see the Clarksville businesses thriving,” she said.

The Clarksville store becomes Burlington’s 11th location in Tennessee.

Store hours are Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m.-11 p.m.

Grand opening ceremonies were scheduled to continue throughout the weekend with giveaways.

The company said Burlington’s new Clarksville location in the mall features an “updated, clean design, making it easy for customers to navigate and find fantastic merchandise at amazing prices throughout the store.”

Lines of merchandise will include:

  • Ladies’ apparel and accessories
  • Menswear
  • Casual finds for kids
  • Footwear for everyone
  • A full line of baby items
  • Home décor items for every season and holiday
  • Pet care and toys
  • Helping community

To celebrate the new Clarksville location’s grand opening and “underscore the retailer’s continued commitment to enhancing educational opportunities,” Burlington donated $5,000 to nearby St. Bethlehem Elementary School through their long-standing partnership with AdoptAClassroom.org.

Funds will be used to support teachers and their classrooms so that they can purchase materials needed for their students.
