PERKINS TWP. — People can bid on great prizes while supporting a worthy cause.

The 31st annual Easterseals auction, which is sponsored by the Register and the WLEC radio station, is happening from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Sandusky Mall, 4314 Milan Road (U.S. 250).

Easterseals development specialist Patti Powers spoke with Register executive editor Matt Westerhold Tuesday on “Between the Lines.” The interview, about 15 minutes, is available on sanduskyregister.com and the Register’s YouTube channel, youtube.com/c/SanduskyRegisterNews.

Easterseals, an Ohio organization that’s more than 100 years old, helps adults and children with disabilities and also provides services, like home care, to area seniors.

Seven items will be on the auction block every 15 minutes, Powers said. Items up for auction include sports memorabilia, gift cards, gift baskets, Kalahari water park passes, overnight trips and more. A full list of items up for auction can be found on page B6 of today’s Register and will also be included in Friday’s newspaper.

In addition to the in-person auctions on Saturday, people can also go to easterseals2022.givesmart.com and bid on items. Easterseals debuted the online bidding last year, which Powers said was a big success. Online bidding begins this morning.

Saturday’s auction will be broadcast live on WLEC 1450 AM.

PERKINS TWP. — Brace for Another Broken Egg Cafe, the Sandusky Mall’s newest restaurant, to hatch sometime this month.

“It is opening on Dec. 20, however, I am hearing that it may actually open next week,” mall spokesman Joe Bell said.

Crews recently installed signage above the storefront’s outdoor entrance beside Sandusky Mall’s main entryway. It’s going inside the former Ruby Tuesday’s location.

Documents show the overall investment totaling about $500,000.

On its website, Another Broken Egg Cafe — which boasts about 80 locations across the country — provided a description of itself:

“Another Broken Egg Cafe isn’t your typical breakfast, brunch and lunch place. Our menu is second-to-none, loaded with fresh ingredients and creative recipes across a wide variety of breakfast classics, memorable brunch dishes and lunchtime favorites. Each location is designed to feel like a casual getaway, served up with a generous side of family, friends and friendly service.”

On a related note, the mall also announced another business with a nationwide presence — Ross Dress for Less — intends to open its first brick-and-mortar storefront in Sandusky. It should be located between T.J. Maxx and Five Below.

“Our people and theirs have been exchanging construction drawings,” Bell said about ongoing talks with Ross executives. “We will likely do some preliminary work on the space and deliver it to Ross in May. Barring any unforeseen delays, the store would presumably open in late July.”

Ross describes itself as a business “bringing our customers a constant stream of high-quality department and specialty store brands at extraordinary savings while providing an easy, fun and organized shopping experience,” its website read.

“All of these stores are part of redeveloped space that used to house a Macy’s department store,” Bell said.

Sandusky Register | Make Cafaro tax deal work

We’re a proponent of development, and we’re a proponent of tax incentives for developers and area businesses. Tax investment is an important tool in the economic development toolbox. That’s especially true when the developer is a known quantity and a respected developer of longtime good standing.

The Cafaro Co., the original developers of the Sandusky Mall, certainly fits that category of a company that has a long history with our community and a deep connection here. That’s why we support a tax abatement plan for Cafaro as it continues to reimagine and redevelop its property near the mall.

This reconstruction plan is for property near the mall, near the old Sears store parking lot, where Cafaro wants to build 126 rental apartments. Perkins Township trustees and the Perkins school board both have approved an agreement that would abate 100% of new property taxes for 10 years. The Erie County commissioners also have to approve it, and that’s not a for certain outcome.

There is some concern the agreement is too generous and that it is precedent-setting in that rental housing is not something normal or routinely granted abatements. We appreciate that concern and believe it’s worthy of review.

This project is not directly connected to redevelopment of the mall property, but Cafaro has already invested heavily in re-designing the mall for a new era. The project is related in that it will support this important shopping district, which has a great history and huge connection in our community. There also is a need for housing that this project addresses.

Given the uniqueness of those aspects, we hope county commissioners, trustees and the school board members can have a meeting of the minds on this agreement.
