Mall Road Crossing construction underway

Thursday, March 30th 2017 – ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio — The Commons Mall Road Crossing started back in the early 2000’s with an earmark from former Congressman Bob Ney.
And in the first quarter of 2017 officials are bringing the project to a completion with the beginning of construction.
The project started around twelve years ago. On Thursday, the first dirt was moved behind the Ohio Valley Mall.
The ceremonial dirt is moved for the Commons Mall Crossing project, a concept more than a decade old. With a purpose to relieve congestion at Mall Road intersections, improve safety and increase economic development.
Construction will include a new 1.67 mile connector roadway west of Mall Road from the intersection of Mall Road and Banfield Road, the reconstruction of .59 mile of the existing Mall Ring Road and construction of a new two-lane bridge spanning Interstate 70, connecting to phase one of the Commons Mall Crossing road that was built in 2015. It connects to Route 40.
The word St. Clairsville will be placed on each side of the new bridge and will be visible from the highway.
“This is not a St. Clairsville-Richland Township project. This is for all of Belmont County,” said Mark Thomas, commissioner.
“The road to get here has been a long one,” said Dennis Bigler, former St. Clairsville city service director.
“For our part, I have a promise for you,” said Joe Bell, Cafaro Company spokesman. “We’re not going to let you down.
“There’s a lot of people to thank for this,” said St. Clairsville Mayor Terry Pugh.
The Mall Commons Crossing project carries a $10.3 million price tag and is scheduled for completion in late 2018.
